James Culver - Design elements.....
Vast open spaces, the subtle blending of color and texture of
the southwestern United States and the tight, clean craftsmanship of the Italian
leather tradition are the two strongest influences in my leather designs. I try
to bring these two elements together in my work. I look for uncluttered, clean
motifs and designs with an integrated emphasis on the structural detail. The
leather piece should speak to the functional side of design, but reveal
something to the user not immediately seen or felt. This process of revelation
makes the experience of owning one of my pieces much more personal.
From early on, I took great satisfaction in making things with my hands. After
experimenting with woodworking and metalsmithing, in 1968, I discovered leather.
The immediacy of the material and the multitude of textures appealed to my need
to craft interesting, finished product in real time. Born and raised third
generation in the west, my family had a rich history of western and Native
American art and craft. I bring this heritage along with my appreciation of the
fine design and craftsmanship of the Italian leathersmiths to all the pieces I
do.
Please enjoy my work, I appreciate your support......... James Culver
